Thomas Tuchel Urges to develop Ziyech, Werner and Havertz talent

Rio Ferdinand names the three Chelsea players who must do better under Thomas Tuchel

Rio Ferdinand believes Thomas Tuchel has got to find a way to get more from three key members of his squad

Former Manchester United and England centre-back Rio Ferdinand believes Thomas Tuchel has got to find a way to get a tune out of Chelsea trio Hakim Ziyech, Kai Havertz and Timo Werner.

The trio joined the Blues last summer in what was a memorable transfer window for the club, costing them a combined total of more than £150million.

Despite their hefty-sized transfer fees, the trio have struggled to live up to expectations so far, with them contributing an overall goals tally of 17 in all competitions between them.

In truth, it is a disappointing figure that they have churned out, with Werner alone tipped by many to take the Premier League by storm in his first season in England, following several successful seasons in Germany with RB Leipzig.

Instead, Olivier Giroud is the man that finds himself spearheading Chelsea’s attacking line at this moment in time, with the Frenchman having scored just six goals fewer than the aforementioned trio on his own.

But with Giroud now at the age of 34 and Chelsea looking to progress as a club, Ferdinand believes the Blues need to start getting the best out of the likes of Ziyech, Havertz and Werner if they are to make progress

“How long are they going to keep relying on Giroud? At his age and where he is at in his career, he is an impact player, 100 per cent,” Ferdinand said on FIVE. “For Chelsea to have Giroud leading the line probably says where they are at and maybe they need to recruit in that area.

“Is Timo Werner a No.9? I would probably say he is better off out wide where he played at Leipzig. But they are fully stocked out there. They have got [Christian] Pulisic who can play out there.

“Where does Havertz fit into this team? I think there are a lot of questions for Tuchel to be answering. That will come with games and more time on the training field.

“He has got to get into these players and unlock them and give them the best chance of staying there and producing something.

“These are three players (Ziyech, Havertz and Werner) that were tearing up their leagues where they came from so he needs that to be transferred into the Premier League.”

When Ferdinand puts the point forward about those three starring at their former clubs, he is not wrong.

During the 2019/20 campaign, Ziyech scored eight goals and claimed 21 assists for Ajax, Havertz netted 18 goals and registered nine assists former club Bayer Leverkusen and Werner hit 34 goals in 45 appearances for RB Leipzig, as well as chipping in with a very impressive 13 assists.

Taking those statistics into account, Chelsea have, in truth, not heard a peep out of Ziyech, Havertz and Werner this season and that is something Tuchel has got to change if he wishes to turn the Blues into a real force, both in England and in Europe.
