Mikel Arteta, Arsenal’s coach, is doubtful if Granit Xhaka, Emile Smith Rowe and Takehiro Tomiyasu would be fit to face Liverpool.

Arsenal were knocked out of the FA Cup third round by Nottingham Forest yesterday. They failed to hit the objective with a single shot.

Again for second time in four seasons, the Championship side upset the north London club with a late winner from Lewis Grabban.

Following the game, Arteta gave an update on three players who were unable to participate in the match.

Xhaka was diagnosed with coronavirus at the start of last week, but it wasn’t officially confirmed until yesterday’s match.

Due to injury, Smith Rowe and Tomiyasu were unable to participate. Arteta was doubtful if the trio would be available for the journey to Anfield.

“I don’t know,” he said Arsenal.com. It will depend on how he feels [on Xhaka] during the next three days.”

“Once again, it’s really depend. They couldn’t play because they were injured [on Smith Rowe and Tomiyasu]. I’ll have to wait then see how things are in the next days.”

The Gunners had a poor FA Cup performance at City Ground. It was similar to their performance four years ago, when they were defeated 4-2.

They were, unfortunately, awful in front of goal this time. Brice Samba, the goalie for the Forest, had a trouble-free night.

Arteta’s team was missing crucial players, but that shouldn’t be used as an excuses for a lack of cutting edge in the attacking third.

On Thursday, the Gunners head to Liverpool for the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final. Arteta will be holding out hope that the trio is found to be fitting.

Gabriel Magalhaes, the team’s center-back, should perhaps return after serving a one-game suspension alongside goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

The Gunners’ midfield remains the most significant problem, especially with Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny away on international duty.

In the defensive third, Albert Sambi Lokonga has been prone to unforced errors. After being ejected, he was somewhat to blame for the goal.

This isn’t the first time something like this has happened. The Belgian should hold his spot in the park’s center, but he may have a new partner before midweek.

Charlie Patino, a recent graduate, struggled on his entire debut. If Xhaka tests negative, he may return, or Arteta might just have a selection headache on his hands.

If Smith Rowe is in good shape, he could be a viable alternative. Otherwise, he may have to rely on Martin Odegaard, who, as we saw yesterday, is just not a fit in the role.

Ben White had previously played in midfield for Brighton, but considering their effectiveness together, Arteta may not want to separate him from Gabriel in central defense.
