Tuchel explains decision to play Hudson-Odoi in new position against Barnsley

Thomas Tuchel sprung a tactical surprise at half-time against Barnsley when he moved Callum Hudson-Odoi from right wing-back out to the left side of midfield.

Chelsea moved into the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, where they will face Premier League strugglers Sheffield United, with a 1-0 win over Championship side Barnsley.

Tammy Abraham scored the game’s only goal midway through the second half but it was far from the slickest display from Tuchel’s Blues.

Tuchel decided to change formations at half-time from a 5-2-3 to a 4-1-4-1 and Hudson-Odoi was moved from one side of the pitch in a defensive capacity to the other side in an attacking role. And Tuchel believes it has further expanded his options of how to deploy his side. ‘Looks like a good option,’ Tuchel said of moving Hudson-Odoi from right wing-back to left midfield.

‘We changed formation to a 4-1-4-1 to escape a little bit easier the pressure in our own half and to make it easier to come to the opponent’s half and to put the game higher.

‘The guys did very, very good from the beginning, it was much, much better from every minute.

‘Then we scored and but I had the feeling it didn’t give us the self confidence to continue and so we got a little bit too passive, we slowed down the game a little bit too much, the passing intensity wasn’t high enough.
