Thomas Tuchel proved right as surprise Chelsea name revealed as best Premier League’s player
The 29-year-old has established himself as a key player since Thomas Tuchel was appointed as Chelsea head coach in January, and there is evidence that the midfielder is enjoying a good season
Chelsea midfielder Jorginho is the Premier League’s top-performing player in 2021.
That is according to CIES Football Observatory as the Italian, surprisingly, ranks higher than the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Bruno Fernandes, and Harry Kane in the top flight of English football.
The organisation has revealed its ranking after comparing each club’s best player this calendar year irrespective of their position, using a unique methodology to produce a scoring system for league matches since January 1.
And Jorginho performances for Chelsea under Thomas Tuchel – and briefly Frank Lampard – has been enough earn him 89.5 points which also puts him two places higher than Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo across Europe’s top five leagues.
Overall, Jorginho makes the top three – behind only Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi – who has a score of 92.5 out of 100 – and Bayern Munich star Robert Lewandowski who is on 89.5 points.
Interestingly, only one other Premier League player makes the top 10.
Jorginho has missed just one Premier League game since Tuchel’s appointment in mid-January, scoring three goals in the process.
And the fact that the midfielder has been revealed as the best Premier League player since the turn of the year proves Tuchel is right to have the 29-year-old as one of his undroppables.
Speaking last month, Jorginho explained how he has been able to grasp Tuchel’s tactical ideas so quickly.
“I have a very good relationship with him because we think the same way about football, we understand each other,” he told Chelsea’s official website. “We know what we want to do, what each other wants to do, so I find it quite easy playing with him because we think the same way.
“We know who needs to be in that position in that moment so we leave space for each other in the right moment.
“We cover each other’s backs, we understand when we need to be close to each other and when we don’t.
“That’s what I was saying when I said we understand each other and think the same way, we understand the right moment to close the space or find a one-two or just to give space for him to drive the ball, because he has the ability to do that.
“I know when he needs that space to drive forward or when he’s a bit in trouble and needs help.”
