The Super League is over for now
Stamford Bridge became the epicentre of it all as thousands of fans gathered to protest against the Super League, with Petr Cech even emerging to calm things down, before the supporters found out they were victorious.

Although the Super League has announced plans to ‘reshape’ rather than call it off entirely, there is a feeling football fans across Europe have won the day – and it’s reflected on every front page across the continent.

Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo splashed the scenes at Chelsea across their front page alongisde the headline ‘Brexit’, while Portuguese paper A Bola went with ‘RIP Super League’ with a tombstone marking its death.

Here in the UK, it dominates many of the front pages, transcending sport into mainstream news.

The Sun celebrated with a chant of ‘Cheerio, Cheerio, Cheerio’, while The Mirror went with ‘Eur not singing anymore!’

talkSPORT host Laura Woods was at the Stamford Bridge protests and says she will always remember the ‘special’ occasion.

“It was amazing. Let me paint the picture for you,” Woodsy told Rangers legend Ally McCoist on Wednesday’s Breakfast Show.

“I turned up at Stamford Bridge around 5pm. It was nice getting on the tube, getting off at Fulham Broadway and going down the Fulham Road – I’m not a Chelsea fan but I’ve spent a lot of time there through the years.

“I used to report on all the home games in 2005, so I have a bit of a soft spot for them.

“It was that walk up the road, you could hear it already. When I got there, there were about 500 fans with their banners and their signs. They were peaceful, but also a real pain for the police because they were blocking the road.

“They didn’t want to let the players into Stamford Bridge and the game was delayed by about 15 minutes because of the struggle. But there was one thing that caught me off guard.

“I could hear them signing ‘Super Frank’ as soon as I got there, and I thought, ‘I miss this’. Fans singing, atmosphere. It was special.

“I will always remember last night for different reasons. There was this bit where there was a little ripple of applause, shouts and celebrations, I wondered what it was.

“People looked around at each other and said, ‘Chelsea have pulled out’. People were getting notifications on their phones and the mood changed.

“It changed from a protest to a celebration.”
