Rio Ferdinand – Thomas Tuchel ‘could get the sack’ if Chelsea don’t qualify for the Champions League

Published

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand believes Chelsea could SACK Thomas Tuchel if he fails to guide the Blues to Champions League qualification this season.

Tuchel was only hired by the Blues last month, arriving at Stamford Bridge as Frank Lampard’s successor upon the club legend being axed by Roman Abramovich.

Tuchel remains undefeated as Chelsea manager and has four wins from five
The German former Borussia Dortmund and PSG manager has enjoyed a solid start to life in west London, drawing his debut match and winning the following four fixtures.

This positive run of results has seen Chelsea book their place in the FA Cup quarter-finals, and also move to within one point of the top four.

Lampard was sacked with the Blues rapidly dropping down the table, and Tuchel has fans once again dreaming of Champions League qualification – an outcome that seemed very, very unlikely as recent as the middle of January.

But failing to guide Chelsea into the top four could cost Tuchel his job in west London, Ferdinand believes.

“I think there is just a bit too much to do, maybe,” said Ferdinand as he discussed Chelsea’s fifth-placed finish. “Leicester are still a fairly consistent team, and I think the other teams will be able to stay ahead of them.

“Listen, I do think [Tuchel] will get it right there – I like him as a manager and the players have taken to him immediately – but I think there’s a little bit to do to get in there.

And Ferdinand replied: “He could get the sack!”

“The remit, 100 per cent, is Champions League football – at a minimum.

“If he doesn’t get in there, you never know with the way that regime is run, he could get the sack!” – Rio

Chelsea return to action on Monday night, hosting Newcastle in the knowledge they can move into the top four should other Premier League results go their way this weekend.
