Ben Chilwell surely needs that surgery after all.

Briefly, it looked as though he just might be okay to make a surprise return in January which is still not certain, but Chelsea can only be so lucky if he eventually make it back on time.

Ben Chilwell’s surgery is set to keep him out for the remainder of the season as the Blues prepare to play the remaining season without him.

The form of the team since Chilwell’s initially got injury has not be ok. Marcos Alonso hasn’t been able to provide a proper cover since that Juventus game where Chilwell went down. Alonso, who have just a year left on his contract at the end of the season, cannot hold the line all alone.

But, it is important to consider all options here. Ben Chilwell’s season ending injury shouldn’t cause Chelsea to panic. This is a short term problem that doesn’t require a long term cover.

The immediate reaction of the club could mean to go out and sign a player, but there are a few issues on that. First of all, that would be the long term cover to a short term problem as mentioned earlier.

Chilwell will come back and with his young age and ability, he’s going to be a starter for some time to come.

Before Signing any new player the club need to have that in mind, cause it’s very hard to find a player willing to come to eventually play as second choice . But that is only the beginning of an issue with a signing.

Chelsea has for a while now struggled to offload players and Covid did not make things easier for them.

Marcos Alonso is surely one of the candidate to be sold in the summer as his deal runs short till end of the season, but the Blues are not sure anyone will buy him just like they couldn’t guarantee it for both Ross Barkley, Ruben Loftus-Cheek. A new signing could just further burden Chelsea with players they can’t get rid of.

Chelsea has Ian Maatsen as a possible option. The Dutchman is currently on loan at Coventry City as they surprisingly are making a strong push for promotion. Maatsen has been a crucial part of his team performance and many have earmarked him for a future at boyhood tean Chelsea.

He may still need another loan in between, but Chilwell’s unexpected injury may force the Blues’ to make a move. So they won’t want to sign a player that will push Maatsen away, especially if that player won’t be a starter immediately when Chilwell returns.

Now, the Blues have one of three possible options here. Option one is to play players already at the club but of different position. This would include seeing the likes of Christian Pulisic and Callum Hudson-Odoi at wingback maybe when Alonso can’t play.

Another Option is to recall Maatsen or even Emerson, if possible. That wouldn’t remove Alonso from the starting XI spot, but it would give Thomas Tuchel more natural options to rest the Spaniard.
