Former Chelsea Star ‘Michael Ballack’ pinpoints key reason behind Timo Werner’s poor Chelsea form

Michael Ballack believes Chelsea’s style of play hasn’t helped Timo Werner amid the forward’s lack of goals in recent weeks despite a positive start to the campaign

Former Chelsea midfielder Michael Ballack believes Timo Werner’s dip in form is down to Chelsea’s differing style of play from what he was used to at RB Leipzig.

Werner enjoyed a fine start to the season following his £47.6million summer move from Leipzig, but he has struggled in recent weeks and he is now on a 13-game goal drought when it comes to Premier League appearances.

The large fee paid for Werner means he is under intense pressure to perform and there is hope he will kick on after Chelsea’s appointment of fellow German Thomas Tuchel.

But former Blues midfielder Ballack believes he needs a little help in adapting to Chelsea’s system of play with the striker getting more of an opportunity to find the net during his time at Leipzig.

“Timo started off pretty well. Of course, if you aren’t scoring as a striker, then it is hard on the self-confidence,” Ballack told The World Game.

“I believe, that it is very hard for him overall, as he was used to playing differently at Leipzig.

“He had a lot more space in front of him. Chelsea is the kind of team that has a lot of ball possession, wanting to dominate the opponent. Maybe even more so with Tuchel.”

Asked about the advice he would give Werner, Ballack added: “Maybe he has to work on his playing style a little bit or try to get himself into better positions.

“As a striker you are depending on your fellow players to find you and if the [goal drought] breaks, then he will be able to find his old form.

“He used to have good phases with the national team, using his physical presence and power to break down on the wing.

“So when the [drought] breaks, then things will go better again.”
