Manchester United misses out Championship League

Chelsea progress to the quarter-finals of the Champions League while Arsenal suffer a painful lesson.

Manchester United had little chance of anything extraordinary in this Champions League. Even before taking into account the best clubs from continental Europe, the Premier League table reveals their gap to their domestic rivals.

“This club is too big for where we are now, where we are not battling for trophies, and going out before quarter-finals. We need to be clear, we are looking to compete for trophies, not top four.

Atletico was one team we couldn’t afford to lose,” said Ralf Rangnick. “Had we played to our strengths, we would have scored more goals. We brought all our offensive players to the match, but it was difficult facing their defensive wall.”

Even so, it was an extremely disappointing evening for United despite its predictable nature. Punished, United had no ideas to break through Atletico Madrid’s defensive block.

To let United have it, they went from one side to the other passing it. Crosses came in. Fodder for these in an increasingly desperate Cristiano Ronaldo tried to knock it past him and run around him. Maybe a decade ago.

“We controlled the game in the second half, and that meant we were much more comfortable. We knew our opponents like to play on the counter-attack, so we decided to deny them the space.” said Diego Simeone.
