The ex-Blues star was damning in his verdict of his former club after their 5-2 defeat at Stamford Bridge
Joe Cole believes Chelsea’s 5-2 defeat to West Bromwich Albion may prove to be a wake-up call to Thomas Tuchel.
The German’s faultless start to life at Stamford Bridge came to a brutal end on Saturday afternoon, as the relegation-battling Baggies fired five past Edouard Mendy.
Christian Pulisic handed the Blues the lead in the first half, but just a couple of minutes later, Thiago Silva was shown a second yellow card and the hosts went down to 10 men for more than two-thirds of the game.
Matheus Pereira scored twice just before the half-time break to hand the visitors the advantage, before two goals from Callum Robinson and one from Mbaye Diagne inflicted the heavy defeat for Chelsea.
Mason Mount did score for the home side, but it proved to be a consolation for the out-of-sorts Blues.
Tuchel was given a lesson by the relentless West Brom, according to former Chelsea winger Cole, who was brutal in his verdict of his old side.
He told BT Sport: “When you’re managing in the Bundesliga and you’re Bayern Munich or one of the top clubs and you’re playing the team second from bottom, you can shift things around and you can plan for the next game.
“But the Premier League is unwavering. The levels are high. You can’t take your foot off the pedal.
“It’s a mindset. It’s a lesson for the manager. We can’t be too harsh on him because he’s been faultless so far, but this is a lesson that the Premier League is unforgiving and no matter who you play against you’ve got to be 100% or you won’t win.”
Cole added: “I think he recognises that there’s no hiding place in the Premier League.
“It’s unforgiving and West Brom showed that because they were sensational from start to finish.”
Chelsea can’t feel sorry for themselves, though, as they prepare for a quick turnaround, with a trip to face Porto in the Champions League quarter-final.
