Over the years, the FA Cup was a safe haven for Arsenal, but Mikel Arteta’s reputation may have been tarnished by the old competition.

When Arteta won the historic competition in 2020, he gained a great deal of leverage.

When Arsenal’s fortunes began to decline in his first full season in command, his victory over Frank Lampard’s Chelsea at Wembley appeared to be his safety net.

After Nottingham Forrest stunned the Gunners 1-0 at the City Ground, the usual daggers may soon use this against him once more.

Arteta and his troubled side were eliminated from the competition after Lewis Grabban scored in the 83rd minute.

While Arteta selected many of his greatest guns against Steve Cooper’s tenacious troops, Arsenal’s secondary weapons fell short against the Championship side.

Mikel Arteta’s squad was eliminated from the FA Cup far too soon than expected. Arteta stunned everyone in the City Ground when he took summer recruit Nuno Tavares off after 35 minutes, and Arsenal prodigy Charlie Patino was replaced by Alexandre Lacazette after 69 mins.

The 18-year-old appears to be a promising future, but he struggled with the cup’s intensity and ferocity — the Arsenal academy star will have better days ahead of him.

The majority of the reactions to Tavares’ first few months at Arsenal, following his summer move from Benfica, have been positive, but his fury and throwing of the gloves prior to his substitution could earn him Arteta’s wrath.

The Gunners missed Thomas Partey and Granit Xhaka’s rock-solid pairing, while Eddie Nketiah seldom challenged the Forrest back four.

Unfortunately for Arsenal, their lack of squad depth will continue to stymie their chances of finishing in the top four and winning the Premier League if it is not rectified.

Arsenal’s recent excellence has made their dreadful start to the Premier League season seem like a nightmare. It was not, however, a dream, and Arsenal cannot afford to dismiss it as such.

Their early squad depth difficulties were highlighted in 2-0 losses to Brentford and Chelsea, before Manchester City trampled them to the ground in the following match.

Arteta’s team has come a long way since that dreadful day at the Etihad Stadium, although their performance with ten men against Pep Guardiola’s side demonstrated their progress.

Patino’s immersion in the first team and start against Forrest indicate that he will quickly become an important component of Arteta’s squad, as can be stated of summer signing Albert Sambi-Lokonga.

However, their alternate defensive alternatives raise even more challenging concerns.

Since joining the Gunners for £15.5 million from Bologna, Tomiyasu has shown to be an outstanding piece of business, cementing the right-side of the back-line with his astute positional awareness and no-nonsense attitude to defending.

Unfortunately, Soares isn’t one of them, as he only seems to come alive when he’s given the chance to charge forward and join the onslaught.

Arsenal’s backup alternatives in the team are neither equal in quality nor artistically comparable.

In the Premier League, few clubs can replace one great player with another of equivalent caliber, but the best teams can compensate for the absence of their star players with players that share the same attributes, skills, and playing styles as the absent star.

This isn’t the situation at the Emirates Stadium right now, and if Arteta’s side loses to Liverpool in the League Cup semi-final, Arsenal will have no other safe havens to fall back on.
