Watford coach Claudio Ranieri responds to Liverpool’s 5-0 win and feat of Mohamed Salah

Claudio Ranieri conceded that Watford were up against the best player in world football in Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah on Saturday.

The Egyptian laid on a terrific assist for Sadio Mane before scoring his 10th goal of the season in the second half of the 5-0 pummeling of the Hornets.

After threading it through to Mane for the opener with a brilliant outside-of-the-foot pass, Salah then twirled and turned his way past several defenders to make it 4-0.

Roberto Firmino added a hat-trick to guarantee Ranieri’s first match in charge at Vicarage Road was one to forget and the Italian was compelled to hail the masterclass performance of Liverpool’s No.11 at full time.

He said: “I think if Salah’s not the best then he’s one of the best in the world at this moment.

“Salah is in great condition and everything he touches is a goal. Well done for him and well done for Liverpool.

“You find out the truth when you are on the pitch against the big teams.

“Defeats are always difficult but I am a very positive man. I saw where we have to improve.

“Look, the match we know the difficulties when you play against Liverpool.

“Everything is okay now, we have to think about ourselves and improve everything.”

Ranieri also labeled Jurgen Klopp’s side as “one of the best teams in the world” following the heavy defeat at home.

“I wasn’t angry at half-time,” he added. “My mind was to understand my players. Now I know them much better.

“For our players, it was their first. We were playing against one of the best teams in the world and everything wasn’t so easy.

“I think at the beginning we were very very nervous. Some of their goals were gifts from us.

“I watched some bad things about my team but some good things, the last 20 minutes when we went face-to-face against Liverpool.

“I had asked them to do that from the beginning but they were very, very nervous. But I knew before I came here I had to work very, very hard and we will.”
