Chelsea player ratings vs Sheffield United: Kovacic and Christensen impress, Werner good

The player ratings are in from Chelsea’s 2-1 win over Sheffield United at a freezing Brammall Lane

Edouard Mendy

Some of his passing was a bit iffy as the Blues tried to play out from the back. Hapless communication with Rudiger for the own goal. He doesn’t have many shots to face with a back five in front of him but there is something that isn’t quite convincing about the stopper. 6

Reece James

Barely had to do any defending and was given plenty of space on the right though he initially seemed reluctant to venture too far forward. Did it more as the second half progressed. 6

Cesar Azpilicueta

Should have seen his error inside a minute punished by Oli Burke. All at sea in the first 15 minutes but got better as the game went on. 6

Antonio Rudiger

Seemed to want to have a shot whenever he had the ball and it wasn’t paying dividends at all. Obviously poor for his own goal as he and Mendy got in a complete muddle. Made two goal-saving tackles at 2-1 to almost make up for it. 6

Pretty comfortable up against McBurnie, who was effectively being man-marked by the Dane. Solid without having to be spectacular and made things look relatively comfortable. Chelsea’s best defender on the night. 7

Ben Chilwell

Clumsy defending all round to concede a penalty but was bailed out by VAR. Never quite looked at the races for the most part. He’s not been in the best of form for some time and was off it again here. 5

Couldn’t get his passing going and was caught napping defensively twice in the first half. The hop, skip and jump was back for the penalty he converted. Better in the second half than he was in the first. 7

Mateo Kovacic

Wonderful pass set Werner clear early on and was the visitors’ best player in the opening 45 as he dictated proceedings. Industrious throughout and one of Chelsea’s better players. 7

Mason Mount

A bundle of energy as he chased down plenty of lost causes from wayward passing. Sublime finish opened the scoring a couple of minutes before the break. Audacious flick made a fool of Lundstram after half time. Indispensable. 7

Hot News!!   CHELSEA TRANSFER: Tuchel's determined to sign 18-year-old France international

Timo Werner

Almost got a much-needed goal with a deft flock only to be dined by Basham. A livewire in the first half and a perfectly weighted pass set up Mount for the opener. Burst through to win the penalty in the second period. All he needed was a goal but this was one of his better performances. 7

Olivier Giroud

Sheffield United’s high press effectively took him out of the game for the first half and he was borderline anonymous. Subbed off on the hour for Hudson-Odoi. 5

Callum Hudson-Odoi (for Giroud, 62’)

Didn’t really have a defined position when he entered the fray. 5

Marcos Alonso (for Chilwell, 62’)

Looks far more suited to Tuchel’s wing-back system than Chilwell does. 6
