Here is how we rated the Blues players in their resilient 1-0 victory over Atletico Madrid in Bucharest

Edouard Mendy

Very nervy beginning as a heavy touch in his box almost allowed Felix to capitalise. Some of his decision making was very interesting. Barely had a save to make all game. 6

Callum Hudson-Odoi

Got forward at will in the first half but his crossing into the box or final ball was lacking. Felt like he could have done a bit more throughout. 6

Cesar Azpilicueta

Wasn’t unduly troubled by Thomas Lemar and was impressive in the second half as Atletico target his side. 7

Antonio Rudiger

Fairly comfortable dealing with Atletico’s counter attacking throughout and continued his resurgence in form. 7

Hot News!!   Thomas Tuchel Urges to develop Ziyech, Werner and Havertz talent

Andreas Christensen

Dealt well with Luis Suarez in the first half and his distribution was good. Stood up well after Chelsea went ahead with some big clearing headers. 8

Marcos Alonso

Sluggish start, lucky his error wasn’t punished by Thomas Lemar on the quarter of an hour mark. Offered plenty of width throughout and was a threat on the counter attack. 7

Jorginho

Passing was sloppy for the majority. Improved in the second half but will miss the second leg after picking up a booking after the break. 6

Mateo Kovacic

Industrious but ineffective in the first 45 minutes. Picked up the pace after the break but wasn’t quite at his fluent best. Subbed with 15 minutes to go. 6

Hot News!!   Five Players Tuchel must use if the UCL final leads to penalities

Mason Mount

Will miss the second leg of the tie after picking up a booking with 40 seconds of kick off. One outrageous piece of skills after the break flummoxed two Madrid midfielders. A bundle of energy but was far more disciplined in a tactical sense than usual. 7

Timo Werner

Had the best chance of the opening period when he forced a comfortable save from Oblak from a tight angle. Quiet in the second half bar one chance he missed from a tight angle. 6

Olivier Giroud

Not really much of note before he decided to brighten the entire evening up with a quite wonderful overhead kick that beat Oblak to give Chelsea the lead. If that’s all you do in a game then so be it. Such a vital goal and gets an extra point for how sublime it was. 9

Hot News!!   Key Defender to Return: Expected 3-5-2 Chelsea Lineup vs Real Madrid

Hakim Ziyech (for Mount, 74’)

Didn’t offer much. 5

N’Golo Kante (for Kovacic, 74’)

Did what he needed to do when he came on to see out the game. 6

Reece James (for Hudson-Odoi, 79’) No rating

Kai Havertz (for Giroud, 86’) No rating

Christian Pulisic (for Werner, 86’) No rating
