Former Chelsea defender and Italy international Davide Zappacosta has disclosed the real reason for his departure from Chelsea in the last summer transfer window.

Zappacosta, who was signed during the reign of former Blues boss Antonio Conte coming after his remarkable time at Turin, ended his four years contract at Chelsea in August.

He went on to join his former club, Atalanta, in the summer.

The Italian defender, in his statement, revealed that he was insistent on returning to Atalanta after the Bergamo outfit entered the race for his services.

Talking to GazzetDellollo Sport, he said: “[Atalanta director] Luca Percassi always reassured me: they wanted me as much as I wanted to come back,” Zappacosta said.

“And at the end of last season, I told Alessandro Lucci, my agent, that Atalanta were at the top of my list”.

Before leaving Chelsea, Zappacosta was sent out on loan last season with Genoa and starred heavily for Il Grifone.

He was a key player at Stamford Bridge during the time of Conte as the Blues coach.
