Chelsea fans may be given chance to return to Stamford Bridge before season ends

It could prove a big boost for the Blues as they attempt to secure a top-four finish in the Premier League under Thomas Tuchel, with Chelsea improving in recent weeks

Chelsea supporters may have the opportunity to return to Stamford Bridge before the 2020/21 campaign comes to a close, according to reports.

On Monday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson unveiled plans which would see up to 10,000 fans allowed back into stadiums from May 17, just six days before the final round of Premier League fixtures.

Chelsea are scheduled to close out out their top-flight campaign with a trip to the Midlands to face Aston Villa on May 23.

And that would have resulted in just one Premier League game being played at Stamford Bridge – the 3-0 victory over Leeds in December – in front of supporters all season.

However, The Athletic report that conversations are being held over whether the 37th round of fixtures could take place in midweek rather than over the weekend of May 15 as currently planned.

There are concerns that the sporting integrity of the Premier League campaign could be damaged if just one round of games are played in front of supporters.

For instance, Chelsea’s top-four rivals Leicester City and Liverpool could play the final game of their campaigns in front of their own fans while the Blues would face an away trip to Villa Park.

An emergency Premier League shareholders’ meeting would need to take place if the rescheduling of the 37th round of fixtures – in which Chelsea play Leicester – is to be approved.
