Chelsea await clarification over Thomas Tuchel quarantine protocol as head coach deal agreed

Published

on

Chelsea hope that Thomas Tuchel will not need to quarantine upon his arrival in London as he will be entering an elite sport exemption programme.

The 47-year-old was understood to be in Germany as of Monday lunchtime ahead of finalising a deal to replace Frank Lampard, who was sacked this morning following a dire run of results, but he is due to travel once he has provided a negative coronavirus test.

Reports that he has been in London for several days to quarantine have been dismissed.

The West London club were still clarifying the exact protocol with government authorities earlier today as Tuchel has been out of work, and therefore regular testing, since leaving Paris Saint-Germain last month.

But there is confidence that an exemption will be made, allowing him to be in the dugout in time for Sunday’s Premier League game against Burnley.

Confirmation of Tuchel’s appointment could arrive as soon as tomorrow but the chances of him being in charge for the fixture at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Wednesday evening is slim.

Chelsea had also considered Ralf Rangnick, while they were told RB Leipzig’s Julian Nagelsmann was unavailable, but the club believes that Tuchel can get the best out of compatriots Kai Havertz and Timo Werner, who have not performed to expectations since being signed in the summer.

Confirming Lampard’s dismissal, Abramovich said: “This was a very difficult decision for the club, not least because I have an excellent personal relationship with Frank and I have the utmost respect for him.
