Check Out Chelsea player ratings vs Fulham: Mason Mount steps up for Frank Lampard, Jorginho struggles

The Blues claimed a narrow victory at Craven Cottage thanks to a goal from Mason Mount, but they were far from convincing

Chelsea’s undisputed No.1 goalkeeper was back in the side having not featured against Morecambe.

He had very little to do for much of the evening, but one moment of miscommunication with Cesar Azpilicueta created a nervy moment which the Blues survived.

Made a couple of routine stops but was largely untested. 6

Cesar Azpilicueta

Preferred over Reece James, the Spaniard endured a difficult opening 45 minutes. Fulham left-back Antonee Robinson was able to breeze beyond the Chelsea captain on more than one occasion and fashion opportunities for the hosts.

On the stroke of half time, however, Robinson dived into a challenge on Azpilicueta and was dismissed

That enabled the 31-year-old to push further forward in the second period with the threat of a Fulham counter limited but he wasn’t able to fashion a clear chance for the Blues. 6

Thiago Silva

The Brazilian was given last weekend off but returned to the side and was shifted over to the right side of the central defence in the absence of Kurt Zouma.

Given his vast experience, it wasn’t a switch that fazed Silva. He was his usual calm self, stepped into challenges when required, and dealt well with the threat of the pacey Ivan Cavaleiro for much of the game. Rarely produces a bad performance, although was booked. 7

Antonio Rudiger

This was only the German international’s third Premier League start of the season, and it was bold from Lampard to shift Silva over to accommodate the 27-year-old.

Hot News!!   Thomas Tuchel made bold prediction about Mason Mount at Chelsea FC

Did it pay off? On the whole, yes. Rudiger is, and you sense will never be, as assured as Silva but he helped handle Cavaleiro, who admittedly did miss a gilt-edged chance in the opening period.

Rudiger almost scored in the opening period from a corner, his header excellently saved by Fulham stopper Alphonse Areola, and in the second half he did well on several occasions to reclaim the ball from Cavaleiro and enable Chelsea to sustain attacks.

His passing needs to improve but he did enough to keep his place against Leicester City. 7

Ben Chilwell

One of the first names on Lampard’s team sheet if fit. Chilwell’s seamless adaptation since arriving from Leicester City in the summer has largely gone under the radar, but it’s because of the consistency of his performances.

He got forward well at Craven Cottage and there were a couple of shots from distance in the opening period.

In the second half, with Fulham down to ten men, Chilwell spent much of his time in the home side’s half. And it was one of his crosses that led to Chelsea’s winner.

A chipped Chilwell cross was palmed away by Areola and Mason Mount was on hand to smash home. 7

With N’Golo Kante ruled out due to suspension, many expected Billy Gilmour to start as Chelsea’s number six. But Lampard opted to go with the experience of the Italian midfielder.

Yet it wasn’t a selection that paid off. Jorginho drifted through the first half, rarely dictating the game when the Blues were in possession. And it was a similar story in the second period even though Chelsea had a man advantage and most of the ball.

Hot News!!   WOW!! From 18 to 5, Thomas Partey will finally get his dream shirt number as Arsenal complete January transfer

There were a couple of nice passes forward, and one well-timed interception, but the fact Jorginho was brought off with 25 minutes still to play tells its own story. 5

Mason Mount

Like Silva, Mount was shifted over to the right side of the team but there was no drop off in his performance levels. How can some Chelsea fans not appreciate the 22-year-old?

He produced a couple of neat touches early on to fashion a chance for Giroud and then rattled the crossbar. At half time, no player had created more chances or completed more take ons than Mount.

In the second period, he continued to show for the ball and continued to make runs in behind. There was also a lovely turn on Ola Aina to open space in the penalty area for a cross that was blocked.

And with Chelsea struggling to make the breakthrough, Mount stepped up. He was on hand to fire home from inside the area and helped the Blue see out the game as part of a midfield two. A man-of-the-match display. 8

Mateo Kovacic

A typical Kovacic performance. There were a couple of lovely turns and a few smart passes, but too often it feels like the Croatian is playing in third gear.

He did improve once Chelsea shifted to 4-4-2 midway through the second period, perhaps as he was given more responsibility to progress the ball with Jorginho hauled off. 6

Hakim Ziyech

A third consecutive start for the Moroccan since returning from injury and he looked sharp at Craven Cottage.

There was a lovely moment of link play between himself and Giroud that resulted in a first-half effort that was saved and one of his trademark crosses was almost turned in by Christian Pulisic in the second period.

Was starting to have greater influence on the game when he was brought off for Hudson-Odoi. 6

Olivier Giroud

Having ended his goalscoring drought last weekend, Timo Werner was expected to start against the Cottagers. Instead, Lampard brought Giroud into his side.

Prior to the game, the Frenchman had averaged a goal every 69 minutes this term and an early half volley from distance was deflected wide.

However, Giroud was well marshalled by the Fulham defence. His only other sight of goal came after the break when he skewed an excellent chance wide. The offside flag was raised. Brought off with 15 to play. 6

Christian Pulisic

Callum Hudson-Odoi has thrown down the gauntlet in recent weeks with his impact when starting games or brought off the bench, so the American had to deliver having been given the nod ahead of the Chelsea academy graduate.

He was quiet during the first half and often ran into cul-de-sacs when trying to beat Kenny Tete. In the second period, Pulisic tried to take responsibility, often dropping deep to collect possession and then trying to break forward.

Pulisic did almost turn in a deep Ziyech cross as Chelsea searched for an opener but he is producing his best at the minute. 6

Tammy Abraham (on for Jorginho, 64)

His introduction from the bench resulted in a change of shape to 4-4-2. Abraham had a header well saved moments after coming on. Had an impact. 7

Timo Werner (on for Giroud, 74)

Still looked short of confidence when on the ball despite getting on the scoresheet last week. Wasted a glorious chance to kill off the game in added time. 5

Callum Hudson-Odoi (on for Ziyech, 74)

Added energy to the Chelsea attack and did his job defensively after Chelsea were ahead. 6
