Arsenal have been given a significant rise ahead of their Carabao Cup clash with Liverpool on Thursday after confirming that Sadio Mane will almost probably miss out.
Following a 0-0 draw at Anfield last week, the Gunners will welcome Jurgen Klopp’s side for the second leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final at the Emirates Stadium this week.
Mikel Arteta faces a number of selection concerns ahead of the clash, with a few of his players suffering from injuries, the most recent of which is Portugal right-back Cedric Soares.
Despite this, the Gunners will not face Sadio Mane of Liverpool, who has helped Senegal advance to the next row of the Afcon.
Senegal will now face either one 3rd-placed team from Group A or Group D in the round of 16, a match that will not take place until Tuesday, January 25, meaning Mane wouldn’t be back in the fold for Liverpool again until after the date.
While the 29-year-old is not having his finest season at Anfield, with ten goals in 26 games in all competitions, he would have been a significant threat against Arsenal, having contributed to 13 goals in 17 appearances against the Gunners; eight goals and five assist.
Jurgen Klopp admitted ahead of the match at the Emirates Stadium that he hoped all of the current Liverpool players competing in the competition, including Mane and Mo Salah, would win the trophy, even if it meant some to remaining away from Merseyside for an extended amount of time.
“We find methods to break down the opponents,” he stated after the Reds’ 3-0 win against Brentford at the weekend. We send our best wishes to the African boys.
“When Mo netted last night and Sadio the other day, we were ecstatic. We desire for all of guys to win the tournament, but that is impossible.”
