How Arsenal could line-up vs Leeds United if Thomas Partey is ruled out through injury

Arsenal will be sweating over the fitness of midfielder Thomas Partey in the build-up to Sunday’s clash with Leeds United after he was forced off against Aston Villa

Arsenal suffered a second successive Premier League defeat on Saturday, going down 1-0 at the hands of Aston Villa at Villa Park.

In-form striker Ollie Watkins netted the only goal of the game after just 75 seconds to seal all three points for the home side and ensure they completed a season double over their opponents.

Although Arsenal produced a respectable showing in the Midlands, they were unable to find a way past Emiliano Martinez in the Villa goal, meaning they returned to north London empty handed.

As well as making the journey home without any reward in tow, they also suffered the blow of having to add another name to the injury list in the form of Thomas Partey. The Ghanian international, who has struggled with injury complaints ever since arriving in England back in October, was forced off with a muscular problem with just over 15 minutes of the contest remaining.

Partey’s premature departure meant that he had suffered the blow of being forced off with an injury in both fixtures against Villa this season, as he was taken off at half time in the reverse fixture at the Emirates Stadium back in November. On that occasion, the former Atletico Madrid man was forced to miss the Gunners’ next two Premier League matches.

Following the full-time whistle at Villa Park, Mikel Arteta – the Arsenal boss – issued an update on the defensive-midfielder, confirming it was a muscle problem he was forced off with.

“He had a muscular issue so we had to take him off,” Arteta said. “He could not carry on playing. We will see the extent of the injury.

“He wasn’t feeling well enough to continue playing so we had to take him off.”

Should the extent of the injury prove to be serious, it could be enough to rule him out of Sunday’s visit of Leeds United to the Emirates Stadium. Partey had just started to get into his stride in north London, starting the club’s last five Premier League outings after a spell on the sidelines.

However, this latest injury setback could be enough to rule him out of Sunday’s clash with Marcelo Bielsa’s Whites.

Should Partey be declared unavailable for selection, Arteta is almost certainly going to call upon Egyptian ace Mohamed Elneny to take his place and sit in the deeper midfield role alongside Granit Xhaka.

That, though, is not the only change that Arteta is likely to make this weekend, as both goalkeeper Bernd Leno and centre-back David Luiz will be available for selection once again after serving their respective one-match suspensions against Villa, after the duo were both sent-off in last Tuesday’s 2-1 defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Kieran Tierney could also return from a spell on the sidelines. The former Celtic man has missed the Gunners’ last four Premier League matches and was unavailable at the weekend because of some “discomfort” in his right leg. But should he manage his load during training this week, and be available for selection on Sunday, it is likely Arteta will restore him to the starting line-up.

Elsewhere, Arteta may feel the time is right to bring Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang back into the starting line-up after stepping off the bench against both Wolves and Villa, whilst Martin Odegaard may fancy his chances of landing his first start for the club since signing on loan from Real Madrid last month.

With that said, football.london has taken a close look at how Arsenal could line-up against Leeds.

As you can see from the graphic above, Arteta could hand returns to Leno, Luiz, Tierney and Aubameyang, as well as including Elneny in place of Partey if the latter is ruled out.

Odegaard could be also handed his first start for the club if Arteta sees enough from him in training this week to think he should disperse Emile Smith Rowe in the No.10 position.

However, Arteta may have the vision of slowly integrating the Norway international into life in the Premier League by several appearances via the bench before handing him that first start.

Possible Arsenal line-up vs Leeds: Leno; Bellerin, Holding, Luiz, Tierney; Elneny, Xhaka; Saka, Odegaard, Aubameyang; Lacazette.
