Manchester United face Liverpool again in the FA Cup this weekend after their Premier League clash – and some of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s stars need to impress the manager

Manchester United face Liverpool in the FA Cup at Old Trafford on Sunday, just seven days after the Premier League title rivals clashed at Anfield.

There is always plenty at stake in any meeting between English football’s two biggest clubs, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will no doubt put out a strong team at Old Trafford.

However, The Red Devils also had to negotiate Wednesday’s visit to Fulham, with their Premier League title bid Solskjaer’s priority.

With little time to recover before Sunday’s fourth-round cup clash, that could mean an opportunity for some of United’s fringe players to show they can do a job for the manager.

Here, Epl Fans looks at some of the players who will be out to impress Solskjaer this Sunday

DONNY VAN DE BEEK

It hasn’t worked out well so far for Van de Beek since his £40million midfielder move from Ajax.

The midfielder has made just two Premier League starts, and has been an unused sub for the last five top-flight games as United have soared to the top of the table.

He did play the full 90 minutes of the the FA Cup win over Watford, and showed glimpses of the ability that persuaded the Red Devils to sign him in the summer.

Having helped earn United a shot at Liverpool in the fourth round, Van de Beek may get another chance to show he can break into a midfield featuring Bruno Fernandes, Paul Pogba, Fred and Scott McTominay.

DEAN HENDERSON

Henderson has had his work cut out to impress Solskjaer since he returned to Old Trafford to fight David de Gea for the No1 spot.

The 23-year-old was in goal for United’s dreadful Champions League defeat against Istanbul Basaksehir in November, his only appearance in the competition so far.

He made his Premier League debut for the Red Devils when he replaced De Gea at half-time against Southampton this month, with his team 2-0 down.

Henderson kept a second-half clean sheet, with United going on to win the game 3-2. He has since played in another two league games, with United going behind in both games before battling back to beat West Ham and Sheffield United.

De Gea has been preferred since, although Henderson played all United’s EFL Cup games and was given the nod for the third-round win Watford.

On Sunday he will be given another chance to show he can usurp De Gea as United’s main man.

ALEX TELLES

Telles was signed from Porto on deadline day to provide competition for Luke Shaw, who had struggled in recent seasons.

And the challenge seems to have worked, with Shaw having returned to top form since his team-mate’s arrival.

Shaw was United’s man of the match in the 0-0 draw with Liverpool last weekend, snuffing out the danger posed by Mohamed Salah and providing an attacking threat down the left for Solskjaer’s side.

Telles hasn’t been helped by having to self-isolate earlier in the season after testing positive for coronavirus.

He played against Watford, and will hope for another chance to show why he notched an impressive 26 goals and 57 assists during 195 games for Porto.

ERIC BAILLY

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has given an update on Eric Bailly
Eric Bailly will hope for another to impress Solskjaer after some encouraging displays

Bailly has looked composed alongside skipper Harry Maguire at the heart of United’s defence recently.

The 26-year-old earned a run in the side thanks to an injury to Victor Lindelof, having recently returned from his own well-documented fitness problems.

But Solskjaer put his trust in Lindelof against Liverpool last weekend.

While Bailly was back in the starting line-up against Fulham in midweek, he may have felt aggrieved not to have got the nod at Anfield.

The Ivorian will hope for another chance this weekend to prove he should be in the manager’s first-choice pairing.

MASON GREENWOOD

Greenwood enjoyed a breakthrough season last term, scoring 19 goals in all competitions having been fast-tracked into the side with United low on attacking options.

He has been in and out of the side this campaign, however, after the Red Devils strengthened with the deadline day capture of Edinson Cavani.

Greenwood has scored just three goals so far his term – although it has to be remembered he is still only 19 and has plenty of time to develop.

He was given the chance to lead the line against Watford, and started out wide against Fulham in midweek.

But Greenwood faces tough competition for a place in United’s forward line as he competes against Cavani, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Dan James.

Sunday could be another chance for the highly-rated Greenwood to show he can be the future of the Red Devils’ attack.
